What is a polishing disc?
A polishing disc, as the name suggests, is a tool used to polish objects.
There are mainly rabbit hair discs, wool discs, sponge discs, microfiber discs, etc. by material, but nowadays, wool discs and sponge discs are mainly used in paint polishing.
If divided by working principle, there are spin polishing discs and DA vibration polishing discs.
What is the role of polishing discs in car detailing?
The polishing disc is the main tool to polish the car paint with polishing machine and abrasive. Wool and sponge (coarse, medium and fine) are used to polish, polish and restore the paint surface with different abrasives according to different paint surface conditions, so as to remove scratches and wrinkles, remove oxidation layer and brighten the luster of the paint surface.
The polishing disc is an important bridge between polishing machine and abrasive, the material, thickness, shape, sponge/wool pattern of polishing disc need to be considered closely, because these factors will affect the actual construction of the jitter size, cutting force strength, and ultimately affect the construction efficiency and construction quality.
So in our commonly used wool disc, sponge disc of the two polishing discs, what are their characteristics? What are the considerations in our construction?
Wool disc and sponge disc what are the characteristics of each?
(1), wool disc
Wool disc for traditional polishing supplies, made of wool fiber or artificial fiber, so if the material is divided into natural and blended two.
Wool disc is generally suitable for coarse polishing or polishing, easy to leave the spin pattern after grinding.
Sheep disc is characterized by strong cutting ability and high efficiency; the disadvantage is slow heat dissipation, improper operation is easy to throw the car paint.
Its cutting ability is strong or weak with the thickness of the wool, the coarser the stronger the cutting power; and the center hole of the disk has the function of positioning, dust collection, heat dissipation, etc.!
(2), sponge disc
Sponge disk since its introduction has been very popular, the market share is increasing year by year, but can correctly identify its quality and use of the scope of not many people.
Sponge use is in accordance with the "ppi (sponge quality)" indicator to measure the PPi is the sponge quality per square inch [par per inch]. Sponge disc index range is 40-90ppi, the higher the PPi index, the softer the sponge; the lower the PPi index, the harder the sponge. Therefore, sponge disc is thus divided into three kinds of grinding disc, polishing disc and reduction disc, which is often referred to as coarse, medium and fine.
Generally speaking, the grinding disc should be 40-50PPi, the polishing disc should be between 60-80PPi, and the reduction disc has a PPi index of 90PPi.
Therefore, the disadvantage of sponge discs is that the cutting force is weaker than wool polishing discs, and the advantage is that it is not easy to leave spin lines, suitable for medium polishing and restoration, and less harmful to the paint surface.
What should I pay attention to when using wool discs?
Wool disc is a coarse disc, cutting ability is too strong, it is easy to throw the paint leakage or wax burning phenomenon, so first of all, pay attention to the speed is not too fast, not too strong, moving speed to be even, this is for a temperature is not too high, so as not to throw the paint leakage!
Secondly, when throwing the corners of the paint (front and rear bumpers, door handles, etc.), the original car material is plastic, the temperature is too high and more likely to soften the paint (throwing the paint), so the force is smaller compared to other areas, and the technique and angle is also very important.
What should I pay attention to when using the sponge disk?
(1), the torque is large:
Accustomed to the use of wool disk people will feel unaccustomed to the first use of sponge: sponge disk "sticky paint" when using as if the sponge is "sticky" in the paint, not smooth rotation. Seriously, the rotor of the machine seems to be "idling", the reasons for these phenomena and the material of the sponge.
Sponge adhesion [grip] strong, take a towel and a sponge in a plane of sassafras, you will find that the sponge astringent much. This strength of adhesion makes a large torque between the tray and the cutting plate.
If this phenomenon occurs, you should pay attention to the following aspects: keep the polishing disc clean, and do not use too much abrasive polish.
(2), the number of revolutions should not be too large:
The torque of the sponge disc is large, as well as the possibility of burning paint. Polishing machine rotation is generally recommended not to exceed 1800 rpm, gears are generally 3-4 gears. And for some polishing machines without gears, should be used according to the actual paint, disc as appropriate.
(3), the technique and angle:
Although the cutting power of the sponge disc is weaker than the wool disc, but when throwing car paint corners (machine top cover, handlebar, etc.), the same need to pay attention to the technique and angle (with the above wool disc is basically the same), or throw through the car paint is just a difference in time.
How to place abrasives on the disc correctly?
When placing abrasive on the polishing disc, do not place it in the center, but to the side. Because when we are doing polishing, the force point of the disc is around rather than right at the center type periphery. So when polishing the lacquer surface the same thing needs to be noted is that first low speed type spot polishing to apply the abrasive evenly on the lacquer surface and then start polishing.
Cleaning method and precautions for polishing discs
Cleaning method:
Wet cleaning: clean with soft water and gently press up and down by hand (not recommended).
Dry cleaning: Clean from the inside out by blowing with an air gun while the machine is rotating.
Caution:
1, when we tear the disk, be sure to pay attention to the thumb under the pressure of the disk on the sticky sheep on a one-time take off, not directly tear off by hand.
2, in the cleaning attention, not water gun rinse, because it is easy to cause the sponge due to high pressure gun pressure, and the sponge break.
3, can not be immersed in water for a long time, which will cause the sponge layer of rubber off.
